The American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters aren’t leaving fans in the dark when it comes to next month’s total solar eclipse.
Cleveland will be directly in the path of totality for the eclipse that will occur on Monday, April 8. And to celebrate, the Monsters have rolled out special edition jerseys that they’ll wear in their game on Saturday, March 30, against the Rochester Americans.
The jersey is dark grey with gradient striping around the sleeves and waist mimicking the glowing light around the edges of the moon as it passes between Earth and the sun during an eclipse. A modified Monsters logo sits on the front of the jersey, with the lake monster shrouded in darkness and a small burst of light starting to emerge from the left side.
The numbers on the sleeves and back have a moon surface texture. But the best part may be the white parts of the jersey — outlines on the numbers, the names on the back and the eyes of the monster and text on the front of the jersey — which all glow in the dark.
The jerseys also have custom shoulder patches with a Monsters wordmark in front of a sun partially covered by the moon.
Fans attending the March 30 game will receive a “Total Solar Eclipse Survival Pack” that includes a T-shirt and eclipse glasses. The shirt has a moon partially blocking the Monsters logo on the front and “I was in The Land for the total solar eclipse” on the back.
The total solar eclipse should shroud Cleveland in darkness around 3:15 p.m. ET on Monday, April 8.
If bad weather in Cleveland means the eclipse isn’t visible, the Monsters will give everyone who bought a ticket to the March 30 game a “constellation prize” of a free ticket to a future game.
