Six teams in the WNBA are ready to rise up with new Rebel Edition alternate jerseys for the 2024 season.
Nike launched the new jerseys on their social media channels on Thursday, April 18. The mission with the new Rebel Edition uniforms is to “Trace the Lineage, honoring important moments, muses and movements in history and the impact they’ve made on the game.”
Since the Twitter video goes through them pretty quickly, here’s a detailed breakdown of all the new looks:
CHICAGO SKY
Chi-Town becomes Sky-Town on the front of the Chicago Sky’s new Rebel Edition uniforms. The jersey features a gradient that fades from light blue to white and is anchored by black trim on the collar and arms. The shorts will feature four six-pointed stars down the sides to go along with the one that serves as a hyphen in the wordmark on the front of the jersey. “This uniform illustrates what can happen when you combine excellence, collaboration, with the great city of Chicago,” the Sky said in their announcement.
CONNECTICUT SUN
The Connecticut Sun continue to celebrate the rich traditions of the Mohegan Tribe with their new Rebel Edition jerseys. The jersey is black with a “KEESUSK” wordmark (the Mohegan word for “sun”) across the chest. The purple and white graphic on the collar is modeled after a traditional Wampum necklace, which “has been used for centuries by Tribal nations to show honor, connection and relationships between nations.” The repeating purple waistband pattern also references Wampum and the symbol acknowledging the four dome directions in Mohegan Tribal culture.
The red, yellow, black and white trim on the sides of the jersey “tie back to the regalia worn by members of the Tribe.” And the “Trail of Life” pattern around the arms and in the side panels expresses the Mohegan belief that, “We walk as a single spirit on the Trail of Life. We are guided by thirteen generations past and responsible for thirteen generations to come.” The dots represent the people along the journey, and the wavy lines represent “the hills of Connecticut and the ups and downs in life.”
The clear silicone turtle shell print on the number sets is a nod to Grandfather Turtle, “upon whom the Earth was formed.” And two diamond shapes represent the Sun and the Orlando Miracle, the WNBA franchise the Mohegan Tribe purchased in 2003 and rebranded.
LAS VEGAS ACES
While they recently ditched red in favor of a new color scheme inspired by the Las Vegas Raiders for their Explorer and Heroine jerseys, the Las Vegas Aces are keeping red around for their new Rebel Edition jerseys. “With the Aces attempting to become the first WNBA team to three-peat since the Houston Comets (1997-2000), their Rebel Edition uniforms are championship red — a color that runs deep throughout the team’s culture and DNA,” their announcement reads. “Red represents energy, strength, passion and action—all core parts of the Aces winning identity.”
LOS ANGELES SPARKS
The Los Angeles are throwing it back to 1999 with their new Rebel Edition uniforms, celebrating their status as one of the WNBA’s original teams. The yellow jerseys feature black side panels with teal flecks inside. The collar, arms and side panels all feature purple and white trim. The arched Los Angeles wordmark on the front is white with a purple outline, while the numbers are purple with white outlines and set in a classic serif font.
PHOENIX MERCURY
The Phoenix Mercury are giving a nod to their local sunsets and to their NBS brethren with their new Rebel Edition jerseys. The black base sets off the pixelated sunset gradient on the right side panel, collar and shorts that pays homage to “Arizona’s signature vibrant skies” and is also featured on the Phoenix Suns’ popular “The Valley” City Edition uniforms, first introduced in 2021-22.
The Mercury will also have a matching court to go along with the jersey, the first-ever season-long alternate court in the WNBA.
SEATTLE STORM
The Seattle Storm are bringing electricity to the court with their new Rebel Edition jerseys. Neon green lightning run down the sides of the dark green jersey, and the “STORM” wordmark on the front of the jersey features a new “electrified” font that’s “inspired by the weather in the Pacific Northwest and the energy this team brings to everything it does.”
New Rebel Edition jerseys were released for five of the other six WNBA teams in 2023. Only the Atlanta Dream continue to use their original Rebel Edition jerseys from when they were first introduced in 2021.
The 2024 WNBA preseason tips off on Friday, May 3, when first overall draft pick Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever visit the Dallas Wings. The regular season starts on Tuesday, May 14, with four games on the slate.
