The Montréal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League are planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of their earliest Grey Cup wins with special one-off uniforms for a game this August.
The 2023 Grey Cup champions announced their home game themes for the upcoming 2024 CFL season on Wednesday, April 17, and among them is a tribute to the 1974 championship team on August 25. Fittingly, their opponents that day will be the Edmonton Elks — the same franchise they beat in the 1974 title game.
Along with alumni in the house, the Alouettes said in Wednesday’s announcement that “our players are suiting up in a one-of-a-kind uniform just for the occasion.”
The graphic accompanying the announcement included the team’s primary logo from that era.
That logo appeared on the front of the Alouettes’ blue helmets in the 1974 season, with player numbers in white on the sides.
The Alouettes wore blue jerseys in the 1974 Grey Cup game, with red sleeves and white stripes around each shoulder. According to The CFL Uniform Database, they also had a white version, which retained the red sleeves but had blue shoulder stripes.
The Alouettes won the 1974 Grey Cup game 20-7 over Edmonton on a wet field at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Larry Sherrer scored Montréal’s only touchdown on a five-yard run in the second quarter.
The Alouettes open their 2024 CFL regular season on Thursday, June 6, when they travel to Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg for a rematch of the 2023 Grey Cup game. Their home opener doesn’t come until two weeks later when they host the Ottawa REDBLACKS at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
